History You Can Feel

For thousands of years, Native Americans with familiar names such as the Sampit, Pee Dee, Wee Nee, Waccamaw, Winyah and Santee lived in harmony with the natural world around Winyah Bay. They were followed by European settlers in 1526. By the eighteenth century, Georgetown had become a bustling port city and a haven for pirates including the infamous Blackbeard. Wealth created by planters rivaled the royal fortunes of Europe.

The end of indigo and rice, war and economic uncertainty would change Georgetown. But through it all, the area’s indelible spirit has remained unchanged. In some ways, the proud people who settled the Georgetown area came here for the same reasons people will come to RiverHouse. They were searching for something more. A richer land. Days filled with promise and opportunity. Freedom. And adventure.
